Advanced Higher Biology: the free resources, and how the exam actually works

Advanced Higher Biology moves into genuinely undergraduate-adjacent territory, cell and molecular biology, physiology, and often a research-skills component, with far more independence expected than Higher asked for.

• Qualifications Scotland's own past papers and marking instructions: free and official, and at this level especially, worth working through as many as you can find, since Advanced Higher has fewer past sittings publicly available than National 5 or Higher.
• Royal Society of Biology: free resources from biology's own professional body, including material aimed at the higher-education transition, genuinely useful at this level.
• PhET Interactive Simulations: free, University of Colorado Boulder, useful for visualising molecular and cellular processes.
• Khan Academy: free, non-profit, has genuinely university-adjacent molecular biology content worth using for background.
• Your local public library or a nearby university library's public access: worth checking for undergraduate biology textbooks that cover this level's molecular and cellular content in more depth than any single free website.

How Advanced Higher Biology is actually assessed, in plain terms: a written question paper alongside a project (an independent piece of research or investigation work), both contributing to the final grade (A to D). Exact structure, weighting and the project's submission date are set by Qualifications Scotland (which replaced the SQA in February 2026), so the Advanced Higher Biology course page on its own site is worth checking directly, particularly the project deadline, which sits well before the exam diet itself.

How markers actually award marks still matters here, structure and directly answering what's asked cost real marks even at this level.
