Advanced Higher English: the free resources, and how the exam actually works

Advanced Higher English asks for something genuinely different again: sustained, independent literary study, often working with a text nobody's teaching you lesson by lesson, alongside extended original writing assessed as coursework. It's the most independent English gets before university, and free resources built for genuine independent study suit it well.

• Understanding Standards: free and official, run by Qualifications Scotland (the new body that took over from the SQA in February 2026), with real Advanced Higher candidate work and marker commentary, worth working through closely since fewer people sit this level and good examples are harder to come by elsewhere.
• Past papers and marking instructions: free and official, and at this level, working through as many as you can find is genuinely worth the time.
• The Open University's OpenLearn: free, run by a public university rather than a company, has short open courses on literary analysis and critical theory that suit the more independent, essay-driven nature of this level.
• The National Library of Scotland: free, non-commercial, particularly useful if your independent study text has any Scottish context or archive material behind it.
• Your local public library: still the simplest genuinely free way to get hold of primary and secondary texts for independent study, including inter-library loan for anything less common.

How Advanced Higher English is actually assessed, in plain terms: it combines an exam paper (analysis and evaluation of an unseen text) with coursework, an extended piece of independent literary study and a portfolio of original writing, both marked externally by Qualifications Scotland (which replaced the SQA as Scotland's national awarding body in February 2026) rather than written in the exam hall. Exact structure, word counts and submission dates are set by Qualifications Scotland and worth checking directly on the Advanced Higher English course page, since the coursework deadlines in particular sit well before the exam diet itself.

The independence this level asks for is exactly what trips people up, not the reading itself. How markers actually award marks is still worth reading, structure and directly answering the brief matter as much here as at any other level.
