Advanced Higher Maths: the free resources, and how the exam actually works

Advanced Higher Maths is a genuine step towards university-level content: further calculus, vectors, matrices and more formal proof than National 5 or Higher ever asked for. Fewer learners sit it, which also means fewer commercial resources exist for it specifically, so knowing where the good free ones actually are matters more here than at any other level.

• Qualifications Scotland's own past papers and marking instructions (the new body that took over from the SQA in February 2026): free and official, and at this level especially, worth working through as many as you can find, since Advanced Higher has fewer past sittings publicly available than National 5 or Higher.
• Underground Mathematics: free, built by the University of Cambridge, aimed squarely at advanced pre-university maths (further calculus, proof, vectors), genuinely well matched to Advanced Higher content even though it isn't built around Scotland's own syllabus specifically.
• GeoGebra: free, non-profit-backed, useful for visualising vector geometry and matrix transformations rather than just calculating them by hand.
• The Open University's OpenLearn: free, run by a public university rather than a company, has short open courses that are a genuinely useful bridge if you're heading towards a maths-heavy degree after this.
• Khan Academy: free, non-profit, solid for shoring up the calculus and algebra foundations that Advanced Higher assumes are already fully solid.

How Advanced Higher Maths is actually assessed, in plain terms: like the levels below it, the course award comes from question paper(s), graded A to D on total marks. As ever, exact paper structure and timing are set by Qualifications Scotland (which replaced the SQA as Scotland's national awarding body in February 2026) and reviewed periodically, so the Advanced Higher Mathematics course page on its own site is worth checking directly rather than assuming last year's format still holds.

How markers actually award marks matters as much here as at any other level, arguably more, since Advanced Higher answers are longer and it's easier to lose method marks in a long multi-step solution without realising it.
