Exam technique: how markers actually award marks

Qualifications Scotland papers are marked against detailed marking instructions, not general impressions, and a huge share of marks lost by otherwise capable students come from not writing to that instruction, not from a knowledge gap.

In Maths and the Sciences, this usually means showing working: a correct final answer with no working shown can lose method marks that would have been awarded even for a wrong final answer, if the working showed the right approach. In English and essay-based subjects, it's often about directly answering the question asked rather than writing everything known about the topic.

This is exactly why past papers matter more than generic revision; they're the only way to see the actual marking instructions in action, and to build the habit of writing answers the way a marker is trained to reward, not just the way that feels most natural.

It's a learnable skill, not a talent some students have and others don't, and it's usually the fastest set of marks to recover once someone's shown exactly where they're being lost.
