Higher Biology: the free resources, and how the exam actually works

Higher Biology goes deeper into the same three areas National 5 introduced, DNA and the genome, metabolism and survival, sustainability and interdependence, with more detail, more mechanism, and less scaffolding in how a question is asked.

• Qualifications Scotland's own past papers and marking instructions: free, official, and the only place to see exactly how a Higher-level answer is actually marked.
• Royal Society of Biology: free resources from biology's own professional body, genuinely useful once the content gets more mechanism-heavy.
• Amoeba Sisters: free videos and handouts, still useful at Higher for the underlying concepts (respiration, photosynthesis, gene expression) even though the depth of a Higher answer goes further than the videos alone.
• PhET Interactive Simulations: free, University of Colorado Boulder, useful for visualising processes like natural selection and gene expression.
• Khan Academy: free, non-profit, solid for shoring up a mechanism that isn't clicking from the course notes alone.

How Higher Biology is actually assessed, in plain terms: a written question paper alongside an assessed practical component, both feeding into the final grade (A to D). As at every level, exact structure and timing are set by Qualifications Scotland (which replaced the SQA in February 2026), so the Higher Biology course page on its own site has the current, definitive version.
