Higher Physics: the free resources, and how the exam actually works

Higher Physics moves into more demanding mechanics and adds genuine quantum and particle physics on top of National 5's foundations, with a noticeably more mathematical treatment throughout.

• Qualifications Scotland's own past papers and marking instructions: free, official, and the only place to see exactly how a Higher-level answer is marked.
• Isaac Science (formerly Isaac Physics): free, Cambridge-built, has genuine A-level-and-beyond physics problem sets that suit Higher's extra depth well.
• IOPSpark: free, from the Institute of Physics, physics's own professional body.
• PhET Interactive Simulations: free, University of Colorado Boulder, useful for visualising quantum and wave phenomena that are genuinely hard to picture from a diagram.
• Khan Academy: free, non-profit, solid for shoring up the maths a Higher Physics calculation assumes is already secure.

How Higher Physics is actually assessed, in plain terms: a written question paper alongside an assessed practical component, both feeding into the final grade (A to D). As at every level, exact structure is set by Qualifications Scotland (which replaced the SQA in February 2026), so the Higher Physics course page on its own site has the current, definitive version.
