National 5 Biology: the free resources, and how the exam actually works

National 5 Biology moves fast across three big areas, cell biology, genetics, and physiology and ecology, and asks for genuine scientific vocabulary and reasoning, not just recall. There's real free, non-commercial help for building all three.

• Qualifications Scotland's own past papers and marking instructions (the new body that took over from the SQA in February 2026): free, no account needed, published directly by the exam board itself, the only place to see exactly how a real answer is marked.
• Amoeba Sisters: free short videos (plus free printable handouts) on cell biology, genetics and ecology, made by a former biology teacher, not a company selling courses.
• Royal Society of Biology: free teaching and learning resources from biology's own professional body, not a commercial publisher.
• PhET Interactive Simulations: free, built by the University of Colorado Boulder, interactive simulations that are genuinely useful for topics like natural selection and diffusion that are hard to picture from a diagram alone.
• Khan Academy: free, run by a non-profit, not built around Scotland's own syllabus specifically, but its biology explainers are solid extra grounding on a topic that isn't clicking.

How National 5 Biology is actually assessed, in plain terms: a written question paper alongside an assessed practical component, both contributing to the final grade (A to D). Exact paper structure, timing and how the practical is assessed are set by Qualifications Scotland (which replaced the SQA as Scotland's national awarding body in February 2026), so the National 5 Biology course page on its own site is worth checking directly for the current, definitive version.
