National 5 vs Higher: what actually changes

"Higher is just harder National 5" undersells what actually changes. The content does step up, but the bigger shift is pace and independence: Higher assumes you can move through material faster and construct answers with less scaffolding than National 5 gave you.

In Maths, this shows up as calculus and more advanced algebra arriving early, with less time spent bedding each topic in before the next builds on it. In English, it's the shift from identifying technique to sustaining an independent argument across a longer critical essay. In the Sciences, it's more multi-step calculations and extended-response questions that reward structure, not just recall.

The students who struggle most at Higher usually aren't the ones who found National 5 hard; they're often the ones who found it comfortable, then hit a level that assumes a faster working pace than they've had to use before. Confidence dips are common and rarely reflect actual ability.
