Sitting National 5 as a private candidate: the short version

If your home-educated learner is heading towards Qualifications Scotland exams (the body that replaced the SQA as Scotland's national awarding body in February 2026), the word to know is "private candidate": someone sitting an exam without being a full-time enrolled pupil at the centre presenting them. It's a well-established, unremarkable category; thousands of people do it every year.

The practical shape of it: you find a centre (a school, college, or other approved presenting centre) willing to register your learner, you register within that centre's own deadline (usually earlier than you'd expect) and you pay whatever entry fee the centre sets.

Two things worth knowing before you start looking: entry windows generally open in autumn for the following spring's exam diet, and subjects with a practical or spoken component (sciences, languages, English) need a centre that can actually host that part, not just an exam hall.
